Community outreach SURF CLUBs
Girls Inc Surf Club
Surf Happens Foundation sponsors two weekly after-school surf "clubs" in partnership with Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara. The Clubs meet weekly at the beach for a comprehensive, step-by-step education in surfing and ocean safety. The club is lead by the experts at Surf Happens Surf School and is designed to encourage young girls to conquer their fears, gain confidence and find a connection to the natural world-together!
"At Girls Inc. we really want the girls to be bold and to try new things and to not have their fears hold them back from trying something new. And that's exactly what surfing has done for our girls"
-Kristina Webster, Girls Inc Director of Programs
Surf Happens Surf School owner Chris Keet has always had a passion for inspiring kids through safe and fun experiences in the ocean, riding waves, and learning about the environment. Since the schools inception in 2000, Chris has donated his time and services to provide these healthy ocean experiences to those less fortunate, starting with kids with cancer and low income families. In 2010 Chris and his wife Jenny formed the Surf Happens Foundation to create a lasting community organization to help facilitate the impactful programs and events the surf school was already providing.
In 2013 Surf Happens approached Girls Inc to partner in launching a girls after school surfing program. The program began with a Girls Inc Surf Day summer 2014, and the Surf Club saw its initial launch in the fall. The surfing class quickly became one of the Goleta centers most popular courses. Due to the programs success, the Surf Happens Foundation will be expanding the program to the Girls Inc Santa Barbara center fall 2016.
We look forward to growing the Surf Club program by partnering with local organizations in the Santa Barbara region in the coming years.
