Second Annual Village Surf Day (VIDEO!)
On Saturday, June 27th Surf Happens Foundation hosted a free surfing day for the youth over at the The Village of Santa Barbara for the second year. The day consisted of beach games, a comprehensive ocean safety, surfing history, and surfing techniques lesson and in water surfing lesson where we got everyone standing and riding waves!
“The goal is to get these kids out from behind the TV and computer and to check out what this world has to offer” says Surf Happens owner and lead instructor, Chris Keet. Most of the kids who participated had never been surfing, and some had never stepped into the ocean even though they’ve lived here their whole lives.
All participants received a reusable bag, Surf Happens t-shirt and hat, and a healthy lunch provided by Silvergreens.
We believe surfing can inspire people of all ages to "step out of the norm" and realize their full potential. That's one of the reasons we facilitate free SURF DAYS to serve at-risk and underprivileged youth in our local community. This program promotes teamwork, boosts self-esteem, and contributes to building the confidence and positive outlook.
The Village is an apartment complex located on the West Side of Santa Barbara. Operated by the Turner Foundation, the area has transformed over the past years into a safe and lively community. The staff is fully committed to improving the lives of the tenants and involved daily in the on-site programming offered to The Villagers.
